Agree the handful of figures that show how the business is doing, with one definition for each.

What it is

Dashboards only help when they show the right things. Many businesses track dozens of figures but can’t say which ones matter, or exactly what each one means.

We work with you to agree a small set of measures for each audience, from directors to team leads. Each one gets a plain-English definition, an owner, a target and a source, so everyone reads the same number the same way.

Want to dig into why a figure moved? See Data analysis. Planning bigger changes across your systems? See Digital audit and roadmap.

Who it’s for

Leadership teams who want a clear view of performance, businesses where teams disagree about the numbers, and anyone about to build dashboards who wants to start with the right measures.

Dashboards we can build

For example:

  • A one-page scorecard for the directors, covering sales, margin, cash and customers.
  • Team scorecards for sales, marketing and operations, each linked to the business goals.
  • A targets against actual tracker, updated every month.

What’s included

  • Goals workshop: what the business is trying to achieve, and how you’ll know it’s working.
  • Measures: a small set of figures for each audience, with early warning signs alongside results.
  • Definitions: what each figure means, how it’s calculated and where it comes from.
  • Owners and targets: a named owner for each figure, with targets you set.
  • Review rhythm: who looks at what, and how often.
  • Scorecard: the framework ready to use, in a spreadsheet or a dashboard.

What you get

  • An agreed set of measures
  • A plain-English definition for each
  • Owners and targets
  • A review rhythm for each team
  • A scorecard ready to use

What we measure

  • Measures with an agreed definition
  • Measures with a named owner
  • Reports that agree with each other
  • Targets reviewed on schedule
  • Measures updated automatically

Done properly

  • Your targets, your decisions: we help you choose what to measure, but the targets and the decisions are yours.
  • Fair to people: where a figure is used to judge a team, we make sure it’s something they can influence, and agree it with them.
  • Data minimisation: dashboards only bring in the data they need, and show totals and groups rather than named people wherever possible.

Questions

How many KPIs should we have?

Fewer than most businesses expect. A handful for each audience is usually enough, with more detail available underneath.

Do we need a dashboard for this?

No. A KPI framework works in a spreadsheet. Many businesses start there and move to a dashboard later. See Dashboards.

Who sets the targets?

You do. We help you choose what to measure, and use your own history to suggest sensible starting points.

How long does it take?

A workshop takes half a day. A full framework usually takes 2 to 4 weeks, including time with your team.

Pricing: a KPI workshop from £750 + VAT, with the scope and price agreed upfront. A full KPI framework from £1,500 + VAT. Every project starts with a free audit.
