Accessibility and performance

Sites that everyone can use, and that load quickly on any phone.

What it is

Accessibility means people can use your site whatever their ability, device or situation: with a screen reader, with a keyboard, zoomed in, or one-handed on a phone. Performance means pages load and respond quickly.

Both make your site easier to use for everyone. We check your site, fix what we find and show you how to keep it that way.

Who it’s for

Brands that have never checked their site’s accessibility, brands that sell to the public sector, and anyone whose site feels slow on a phone.

What’s included

  • Review: automated and hands-on checks against WCAG 2.2 AA, including keyboard and screen reader use, and speed tests on phones.
  • Fix list: every issue, explained in plain English and ranked by impact.
  • Fixes: changes to code, design and content.
  • Content guidance: image descriptions, headings and link text your editors can follow.
  • Speed work: images, fonts, scripts and caching.
  • Re-test and report: proof of what changed.

What you get

  • A review report
  • A ranked fix list
  • Fixes, made and re-tested
  • A draft accessibility statement for your site
  • A short guide for your editors

What we measure

  • WCAG 2.2 AA issues found and fixed
  • Key tasks completed by keyboard alone
  • Page load time on mobile
  • Page weight
  • Google’s page experience measures (Core Web Vitals)

Done properly

  • The standard: we build and test to WCAG 2.2 AA, the standard UK public bodies are tested against. GDS and NHS bodies monitor against WCAG 2.2.
  • What’s new in 2.2: criteria such as Focus Not Obscured (Minimum), Dragging Movements, Target Size (Minimum), Redundant Entry, Accessible Authentication (Minimum) and Consistent Help.
  • For private businesses: WCAG is best practice rather than a named legal standard. The Equality Act 2010 requires reasonable adjustments for disabled people, and the 2018 accessibility regulations apply to the public sector only.

Questions

Is accessibility a legal requirement for us?

Public bodies have specific accessibility regulations. For private businesses, the Equality Act 2010 requires reasonable adjustments for disabled people, and building to WCAG 2.2 AA is a clear way to show you’ve taken accessibility seriously. We’re developers, not lawyers, so for legal advice speak to a specialist.

What’s new in WCAG 2.2?

New A and AA criteria include Focus Not Obscured (Minimum), Dragging Movements, Target Size (Minimum), Redundant Entry, Accessible Authentication (Minimum) and Consistent Help. In plain English: visible focus, bigger tap targets, no drag-only controls, no re-typing the same details, easier logins and help that’s easy to find.

Can a plug-in make our site accessible?

Automated tools catch some issues, but not all. Real fixes happen in the site’s code, design and content.

Will a faster site help our search rankings?

Speed is one of many things search engines look at, and it helps visitors stay. We don’t promise ranking changes.

Pricing: a fixed-price accessibility and performance review from £750 + VAT, with fixes quoted upfront or included in a care plan. Every project starts with a free audit.
